Jews settled in Mogilev in the first half of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Jews made up almost half of the city's population.
The Jews played an important role in the economic, cultural and financial life of the city. Before the beginning of the Second World War, according to the census, Mogilev had 99,420 inhabitants, of whom 19,715 were Jews; a further 816 Jews lived in the suburbs. At the beginning of 1940, there were around 3,500 refugees from Poland in Mogilev. There are several variants of the town's name: in German: Mahiljou, in Russian: Mogilev, in Belarusian: Mahilyow.
